AAUW Newburyport & AAUW North Shore Area Branches
The Year in Review 2009-2010

Thanks to all who helped make our tea for Patricia such an enjoyable event. We were blessed with a beautiful day and some wonderful treats.  It was fun just to have the chance to socialize!

The Newburyport and North Shore Area branches in Massachusetts join regularly in co-sponsoring events during the year.

Our key events for the year included:

September: Membership Coffee at the West Peabody Branch Library. Speakers were Lt. Col. Catherine Corkery, Director or Human Resources for the MA National Guard and Juliana Silva, our sponsored representative to the NCCWSL Convention in June, 2009.

October: Tea and Reception for Patricia Ho, celebrating her election to the Association Board, at the last National Convention. This was held at the home of Liz Fragola.

November: Author Stephen Puleo speaking about his book, The Boston Italians (a NCCWSL fund-raiser) at the Georgetown Library.

December: Holiday lunch featuring an EF speaker, a musical program by a Salem State Student using a Chinese musical instrument; a 90th birthday celebration for Margaret Ridge, and a lively silent auction, proceeds going to EF. This was held at the Rowley Public Library.

January: At the Peabody Essex Museum, members enjoyed a special program entitled: “A Conversation About Reality, Identity and Style”, as they visited the exhibits of Iris Apfel and Valerie Belin, personally facilitated by Patricia Ho, docent at PEM. Luncheon followed, in the Atrium.

February: Yvette Villa-Barry and Tamara Gaydos led a discussion at the West Peabody Branch Library entitled: “Modern Women’s History: a Progress Report.” This was based on Gail Collins’ book “When Everything Changed, The Amazing Journey of American Women from 1960 to the Present” and “The Shriver Report” http://www.awomansnation.com/preface.php.

March: Members toured the Schepens Eye Research Institute, known internationally as one of the top research facilities dedicated to causes and cures of eye diseases, including growing stem cells from skin cells. Carolyn Bellefeuille was instrumental in organizing the tour; and lunch followed at Liberty Hotel, Boston

March again: Since March is National Women’s History Month, some members went to the the movie theater to see "Half the Sky" which was followed by a panel discussion.

April: Several members attended the State Conference in Attleboro, MA. The theme of this conference was “Breaking through Barriers”, highlighted by discussions of the newest AAUW publication: Why So Few?
April again: Pat organized our 2nd “Coffee with the Authors”, this time featuring Lynn Potoff ,Too Many Skeletons, Not Enough Closets, and Susan Ravagni, I’m Just a Girl.
Both authors were well received and they, in kindness and support of our causes, made monetary contributions to AAUW.

June: Twenty-six members of the Newburyport and North Shore Branches enjoyed our Annual Banquet, at Teresa’s, Middleton, enjoying good food, drink and conversation, enjoying the fruits of our labor, and anticipating what the next year will bring. Because of money raised for NCCWSL, we were able to fund our chosen candidate for this year: Taylor Krajewski, a junior at Salem State from Swansea, MA.
We were able to fund Registration, Room and Board ($395.00), as well as her
flight to Washington DC, from profits of the November and April Author's Coffees. Taylor shared some of her experiences and thoughts on that special conference for college women student leaders.
